Elton John

It was late 2014 that I heard that the great man himself Elton John was coming to New Zealand for one show only. I was incredibly excited that I’d be able to see him live in concert perform all his hits, and perhaps a few unknown songs. And then I decided to leave the country in pursuit of the OE. Sure, missing Elton wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and with moving to the UK I guess we knew we’d see him at some point.

A few months after we arrived in the country, our opportunity came around again. A friend had pointed out that he was doing a UK tour, and suggested getting a group together to go and see him. We settled on a date in Exeter, nearly eight months later.

It finally came around to that weekend in June to make the trip south-west again to Exeter for the gig, as well as catching up with some mates and seeing the cathedral choir in concert there (which was outstanding by the way).

Booking that far out and knowing it was an outdoor concert in June, I expected it would be a wonderful sunny afternoon and evening and it might even be a bit warm. Not the case at all, as the great British weather kicked in, with periods of rain throughout the concert. So there we were, sitting outside, most of us in our raincoats trying to stay dry. To be honest, it wasn’t the most pleasant of situations to be in.

Then came Elton.

The man is a legend and a performer. Once he took the stage you forgot it was wet and cold. People got out of their seats and danced in the aisles, while everyone belted out the lyrics to his well-known songs. He performed everything from the classics like Bennie and the Jets and All The Girls Love Alice, to some new pieces from his latest album.

It was certainly an amazing concert, and worth the two year wait to see him live.
